No Child Left Behind Makes The Failing Grade!
During 2002, the Federal government, by Action of Congress, enacted their controversial No Child Left Behind Act(NCLB) . This program was intended to improve the primary and secondary school student’s understanding, chiefly in the areas of English and math. While this is an admirable objective, the build of the system has hit a brick wall to bring the sought after results. Most educators have laid the fault on the approach laid out inside the No Child Left Behind method. With its target squarely on English and math, students, teachers and administrators face a task which imposes punishments if the aims are not achieved.
Such punishments use the type of rescinded Federal money, which produces a catch- 22 kind of condition. Even the funding which is appropriated has not been received by the states. This has been regular exercise since the inception of No Child Left Behind. In 2002, nearly$ 4. 2 billion bucks which was appropriated in no way reached the states. In 2007, this money gap grew to an amazing$ 14 billion dollars! To add to the financial woes of the school districts, states all around the nation were suffering funding shortfalls in revenues, due to the state of the general market.
This key fact resulted in numerous states discovering it necessary to make budget cuts in several places, such as, you guessed it, education! Despite the fact that schools are expected to administer normal tests in English as well as math, the testing protocol of No Child Left Behind does not extend to other subjects. Some schools were compelled to drop alternative subjects from their curriculums if they were to maintain the Federal financing. This doesn’t seem like a healthy overhaul of our academic system.
